Love Magic - Blog Post
Humans are incredibly complex beings, and how we emotionally interact with the world, with our spirituality, with other people, and with ourselves is a reflection of that complexity.
We all have different emotional needs and wants, histories and complications, messy pasts and dreams for the future. It's part of the human experience!
Call it companionship, friendship, romance, or affection.
Call it lust, comfort, support or desire; love comes in a hundred different ways, with a thousand different names - and human beings have been doing magic and ritual around this enduring Mystery as long as we have been people!
Our needs reflect in our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health. Doing ritual and spell work to support and feed our hearts and our good emotional health can be a ritual and important part of our emotional journey, as witches, magical practitioners and spiritual seekers.
There’s often a major focus on “love spells” as a big part of witchcraft and there’s a lot of misconceptions about them, such as the idea that you can “make” someone fall in love with you. True lasting love can’t be compelled, as it is a choice that can only be real if it comes from the free will and consent of everyone involved! If you wouldn’t want someone to force you to do something physically, that’s your guideline to trying to force someone to do something magically.
You can do love magic to:
- Boost your natural sensuality, confidence and sex appeal.
- Connect more deeply with an existing lover.
- Ask the Universe to guide someone into your life that works within the parameters you’re looking for - such as a spicy new fling, a long term relationship, or an intimate friend.
- Heal your heart and overcome emotional wounds.
- Strengthen and deepen your own self love and appreciation.
- Reclaim emotional ties you have left to other people who you have moved on from.
Valentines Day has a complex history; dating back to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia on February 16th; a pagan Roman religious festival day honouring Faunus, with rites and rituals to boost the bounty of the crops and the fertility of the Roman women in the coming year. The Christian church outlawed these celebrations in the 5th century CE, when the Pope at the time made February 14th the saint’s feast day of the matter Saint Valentine. In the Middle Ages, this was the day that folklore believed that birds chose their lovers for the mating season. People, inspired by the notion of lovebirds, were in the habit of exchanging love notes and tokens of affection on this day, as far back as the 1700s, which were generally replaced with printed cards by the 1900s.
As you see, we’ve been celebrating and honouring loving relationships around this time of year for a long time! Nowadays, this holiday has an overemphasis on the strictly romantic aspects of the human relationship spectrum, and a lot of us who don’t have a “significant other” to celebrate the day with feel left out and disconnected from the energy of the rituals surrounding this holiday.
However, there are so many ways to celebrate! There are a lot of different rituals and workings you can do to tie into the magical energy floating around this ancient festival.
RITES OF SELF LOVE:
Honour your divine self with the same loving care and attention you give to others in your life you love and respect.
Run yourself a Self Love bath, light some Love is the Law incense, anoint your sacred vessel with Self Love oil, write out a cherishing and loving letter to your very own Self with Venus Ink and burn the Self Love candle over it- keep it safe with the rose quartz from the candle or with the Love Crystal Kit to empower and energize your spirit with the love you deserve and help your inner light shine brightly!
SACRED SEXUALITY:
Paganism celebrates the (con)sensual acts of love and pleasure as gifts from the Gods - exchanging pleasure and energy with a partner is a great opportunity to draw closer to them, and be more centred and comfortable in your own body as well.
Share my Lovers Elixir or Lovers Delight tea before setting the scene with the Spirit of Lust candle, incense and anointing oil. Dust the sheets with Lover’s Delight body dusting powder or spray the mattress with Love is the Law or Goddess spray before spreading clean sheets. Draw down the Divine Lovers with this gorgeously detailed and tantalizing candle or celebrate the beautiful diversity of love with these same sex lovers candles!
LOVE DRAWING MAGIC:
Tap into the heightened energy of the day with doing ritual work to draw your desired partner to you -
write out the qualities in a person you’re looking for on my Come to Me, Love Magnet or Heart’s Desire candle or on parchment talisman such as the Second Seal of Venus and anoint it with the Venus Blessing, Love is the Law or Magnetic Drawing oil, dust it with Come to Me powder and set a Come to Me incense burning over it daily while the candles are burning.
HEART HEALING WORK:
Reclaim what can be a difficult time of year and actively do ritual work to reclaim yourself and recenter yourself in your feelings and emotional strength. Heal heart wounds, process emotional damage and work to rebalance your emotional energies with the Heart Chakra tea, Heart Chakra candle, anointing oil and heart chakra cleansing incense. Tone, cleanse and rebalance this sacred energy centre within you- the heart is the balance and pivot point of your spirit’s energy flow, allowing us to both receive and give love freely and deeply. So often this is blocked or distorted by bad relationships and emotionally scarring history; but as witches we can actively work to energetically address these issues.
No matter how you choose to celebrate this season of love, taking the time and opportunity to reconnect with friends and loved ones we’ve drifted apart from, shower yourself with appreciation, bring joy to a partner or lover or just bringing yourself home to yourself is a worthy endeavour, any time of the year.
